While the UK was being hit with some big storms and all us surfers, who couldn’t escape for just some of the British winter, putting on as much neoprene as possible, team rider Ben Howey was making the most of the sunny warm weather by scoring with the waves in Sri Lanka over Christmas.
Ben also gave us some advice on where to go in Sri Lanka, which we thought might be useful to those of you planning your next surf trip and can’t decide or aren’t sure on where to go or where to stay, and are keen to get a taste of what Sri Lankan waters can offer. Or for anyone who is just interested or a keen traveller.
‘The best place I found to stay was at Rams Guesthouse near in Midigamma. You can get a taxi there from the airport, however, if you are on a budget, the train to Welligamma is the cheapest option. The guesthouse is nice enough, with simple rooms from about £10 a night with the right hander, Rams or Lazy Right, from the pictures right out in front. There is a left hander just down the beach called Lazy Lefts, which can be fun but isn’t so good. There is also a fun right hander called Plantations which is much deeper and less intimidating than Rams. If the swell gets over 5 foot Rams usually closes out, so a 10 min tuk tuk ride (a motorised tricyle or autorick) to Cabolana is worth a go with a fun left and a right.’
And of course, ‘..a good nightlife can be found at Unuatuna or Hikkadua. Saturday night at Mambos at Hikkadua is always a good party on the beach.’
As you can see from the photos, no wetsuit required, check out our range of rash vests if you’re looking to head to warmer climes. Or just for a little extra protection in this harsh weather this winter.
